Winamp Transcoder 2.0a
Winamp Transcoder is a plugin for Winamp which allows you to convert all selected songs from any format to the format specified in the Configuration.
It adds a “Transcode” option to the “Send To” menu that you access by doing a right click on the file.
Winamp Transcoder can be configured by going to Winamp Preferences and then to “Media Library” under “Plugins”. Click “Transcoder” and eventually, “Configure”.
Encoding settings are separate from CD rip settings.
The main features of the Winamp Transcoder are advanced naming (music is saved in any directory structure that you choose), easiness of use (it takes just one click to access the plugin’s options) and format compatibility (it transcodes from any format with a Winamp input plugin to any format with a Winamp encoding plugin).
The Winamp Transcoder plugin has not been updated anymore since 2006 and its last version was 2.0a. Some of the changes included in the final version are getting the correct extension when encoding to FLAC, copying metadata correctly and using IPC_CONVERT instead of other emulation layers.
The main advantage of the Winamp Transcoder plugin is that it never crashes. Unfortunately, this piece of software is closed-source, which means you cannot modify it.
Winamp Transcoder has an API so it can work for other plugins. It can be used by mI_iPod to transcode files which are not compatible with iPod, for instance.
This Winamp plugin is outdated as its developer has not launched a new version for many years. Nevertheless, the Winamp Transcoder can still be helpful if you are using an older version of Winamp, which doesn’t offer the wide range of options provided by today’s software.
