DivX 10.8.5
DivX at one time was a great 'codec' and I loved it using Dr.DivX to convert files into DivX Home Theater files. I purchased DivX starting at version 4 and continued to upgrade from there.
DivX 6 was great with Dr DivX 2.0 converter. However, DivX network ended Dr DivX (and later ended support for Dr DivX 2.0) while pushing their crappy DivX Converter that did little to nothing. The Dr. allowed for 'one click' DivX conversion to 'limit the file size'. Even though the DivX Converter claims it will, it will not. I've sent at least 4 complaints about this and they have never fixed that issue. Why? Probably because h264 is better than the DivX codec. However, not everyone needs, or even cares for HD 1080, or UHD 4k video.
All I want is to create DivX files that are DivX Home Theater compliant, burn them to a 'single 700MB CD' like I could easily do with a 'single click' in Dr DivX and play them in my stand alone DivX Home Theater Certified DVD Player. Lastly why do they continue to call it DivX when they removed the DivX codec from DivX?
If the file is not being encoded using DivX codec, but rather h264, Xvid, or some other codec, then it cannot be a DivX file.
I would not recommend DivX 10 to anyone.

DivX 10
divx10 SUCKS! wont play ANY audio from ANY of my video files.
plays video perfectly but not a bit of audio and when I go to audio preferences and click on the correct track to use which is MPEG-1 Layer-3 audio (which is MP3 btw...the MOST USED form of audio probably on the PLANET at the moment) divx10 does not recognize it...
are you serious?!?! and i cannot find a solution for this problem ANYWHERE!
stay away from divx10!!!

DivX 8.2.1
I'll just give it a 2 since I haven't downloaded it.
Why 2, you may ask? Well, here we go then.
"The DivX 8 codec is the latest and greatest release of DivX, THE BEST COMPRESSION TECHNOLOGY for high-resolution movies."
THE BEST, you say? Well, looking at tests, XviD is better than this.
And it's absolutely free. That's already something.
But saying "The Best" is really marketing gimme-gimme, as x264, THE BEST OF THE BEST, outperforms this by a whole league.
And once again, is absolutely free.
Don't get DivX, there are much better alternatives. And free too.
And yes, I do know that x264 is AVC while DivX is ASP.
But they still say the best, while XviD - a free alternative, is better.
Boo.

the whole package is the result of greed. it slows down computer. you buy everything and pay for the codec too! nonsense!! always go for any other damn thing on the net.
DivX 8.1.2 updated
Ouch. Where to begin.
Let's see.
It's a big program, 46mb.
It took a long time to install.
I brought up VirtualDub, Virtualdub took a long time to load. It also took a long time to select the codec (locked up the computer for a bit each time I highlighted it in, they're doing something screwy there each time it's looked at).
I brought up a test video, tried to encode with it.
Then it crashed and brought up this message:
"Error Code 0x80044005"
Aaand it's a commercial codec, and they want money for their hard work ! Gimme gimme !
They're gonna have a long wait ! ☺
I'm running Win7/64-bit VirtualDub & tried TMPGenc Xpress, both crashed with it (and both programs took a LONG time to load too specifically because of DivX cause it's never acted like that before). All other codecs work fine.
I still recommend the top 3 codecs as #1 Google Video Codec, #2 XviD Codec and #3 Windows Media Video 9 Codec last.
Since this version of DivX actually slows down anything that even smells like it can play or edit an .AVI I must uninstall it to get the speed back on my computer, sad I know.

The very latest Divx convertor uses DX50 for Home Theater profile. Highest level Plus HD is 1080 H264 - AC3. When done converting, the PLAYER will not PLAY it. A plugin or codec is required to play video -Xvid, Divx 5, H264 HD.
This does not take advantage of ffdshow audio/video already installed on my PC.
Huh? - the player will not play the convertor output?
I recommend Divx Author for creating Divx 5 (dx50) instead.

DivX 8.0.1
DivX is a dead format nowdays (implementation of H.264 proves it).
Encoder is really slow and multi core support is not great. Converter is a joke - it has like no encoding options. I wouldn't pay for it even 5 bucks.

DivX 8.0
Bloatware
The good:
Their DirectX asp -h263 (mpeg4 part 2) decoder is the fastest around;
their DirectX avc -h264 (mpeg4 part 10) decoder is the fastest "free" around (only coreavc is faster);
The bad:
no mp4 support - not all avc+aac files are in a mkv container so to play mp4 you'll need haaly's splitter, and the divx player doesn't support loading external ax splitters so you can't watch mp4 files if you don't use Quick Time? -- I still don't get this!
The DivX vfw asp encoder is payware and not that fast!!! So you're better of useing XviD or ffdshow's vfw encoder.
Plus ffdshow with support for 20+ video and audio formats is about 4MB, this is 40MB where have the bytes gone!
For playback in Windows Media Player (or any DirectX compatible player: Zoom, Media Player Classic etc) I recommend ffdshow + halli's media splitter, and for encoding to avi (mpeg4 asp) use XviD or ffdshow, and most people don't realize that ffdshow comes with h264 avc vfw encoder!!!

DivX 6.8.2.9
I'm also not able to use this on my dual core. It gives a thread processing failure about 1 minute into encoding every time. Tried different apps and settings, same result.
No other codec crashes like this for me, so this is crap.

As mentioned before, No one really needs this bundle.
You can just use ffdshow SSE with Media Player Classic/Zoom Player or MPlayer with or with out GUI or front-end

Better to use Xvid or X264. Both better quality than Divx.
There are better alternatives to divx with an annoying toolbar.
